Agencies in Uganda switch off for WED

Fri, 06/06/14

To mark World Environment Day 2014 UN Agencies in Uganda switched off lights and other electrical appliances as a demonstration of their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

UN staff based in Uganda turned off air-conditioners, lights and even mobile phones for one hour between 1pm – 2pm yesterday (5 June). The switch off happened at the request of Ahunna Eziakonwa-Onochie the UN Resident Coordinator for Uganda as part of a wider emissions reduction plan led by the Operations Management Team. Representing Resident Co-ordinator in the National Celebrations to mark the World Environment day, WFP Country Director, Ms. Alice Martin-Daihirou, will today present a statement on behalf of the UN Country Team in Uganda.

"Doing the right thing for the environment can also help reduce operating costs, with no impact on our ability to deliver our life-saving mission," she said. "The UN System is proud to be a partner with government, local government, civil society and the public in developing a number of policies, legal and institutional frameworks that have been put in place to curb environment degradations. In the words of the United Nations Secretary General: ‘Planet Earth is our shared island, let us join forces to protect it'."

WFP staff got behind the initiative by putting up posters around their office, raising awareness of energy saving measures and supporting the switch off message.

During the lunchtime switch off, each UN office was also asked to plant at least two trees on their property – or as many as they have space for!

The World Environment Day activities are part of a larger campaign in Uganda to encourage all staff to travel less, pool their journeys and “power down” their offices, switching off lights when rooms are empty and shutting down as much as possible at the end of the day.
