Water Management - Methodology

The methodology for measuring and reporting water management practices was developed during for the 2017 pilot water data survey and implemented during the 2018 water inventory.

The methodology requires the collection of the following water data:

  1. Quantity of water usage by source (e.g. municipal supplier, groundwater, rainwater, etc.)
  2. Whether the site is a major withdrawer from the specified water source (withdraws more than 5% of annual average volume of the water body)
  3. Whether the water source is a protected area
  4. Quantity of water recycled internally

This approach aligns with the water indicators used by GRI (the Global Reporting Initiative).

In addition, qualitative information on good practices such as implementation of policy and water management plans is collected to enable the sharing of best practices between UN entities.
